Linezolid antibiotic is used to treat people suffering from infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, resistant to other antibiotics. Linezolid works against Gram-positive bacteria that cause disease, like streptococci, vancomycin-resistant enterococci, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Linezolid injection comes in ready to use sterile isotonic solution. Sodium citrate, citric acid, and dextrose are inactive ingredients in an aqueous vehicle for intravenous administration. Tap the bottle gently to loosen the powder, then add 123 ml distilled water in two portions in total. After adding the first portion, shake strenuously to wet all the powder. Then add the second portion of the water and shake vigorously to obtain a uniform suspension.
Dosages
Linezolid injection is given in combination with other drugs sometimes. Compatible drugs in combination with Linezolid are 5% Dextrose Injection, 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection, Lactated Ringer’s Injection. The injection is given in combination with other drugs; each drug should be administered separately based on recommended dosage and route of administration for each product. Strengths of linezolid injection are: 100-mL (200 mg linezolid), 200-mL (400 mg linezolid) and 300-mL (600 mg linezolid). Intravenous infusion of Linezolid is preferred in adults only.
Linezolid 600 mg tablet is orally administered, and Clinicals recommend it for adults only. Patients taking Linezolid dosage take it according to the prescription of the doctor. Overdose can lead to severe side effects. Take Linezolid tablets IP 600 mg by mouth with or without food as directed by the doctor, generally every 12 hours. The dosage recommended for children is based on age and weight also, and they may be prescribed to take this medication every 8 hours.
Oral suspension of Linezolid is recommended for children under age 12 years. The oral suspension comes as a dry, white to off-white, flavoured granule/powder. When constituted as directed, each bottle contains 150 mL of a suspension providing 100 mg of Linezolid per 5 mL. Before using the suspension, gently mix it by inverting the bottle 3 to 5 times, do not shake the suspension. Use the suspension within 21 days after constitution.
