How Carvedilol is helpful in Congestive Heart Failure

Carvedilol is the medication that is used in the treatment of congestive heart failure(CHF), high blood pressure, and left ventricular dysfunction. Carvedilol is generally used in the treatment of congestive heart failure(CHF). #Carvedilol mainly inhibits the angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitor (ACE Inhibitor) and diuretics. The main function of carvedilol is unknown but it is assumed that it improves the structure and function of the heart.

Carvedilol is also used along with anti-hypertensive drugs as it decreases the risk of mortality and hospitalization by reducing the effect of hypertension on the heart.

Dosage and Administration:

Carvedilol tablets are available in different concentrations. The concentrations are as:

The active ingredient of the tablet is carvedilol. The inactive ingredients are Silicon dioxide, lactose, magnesium stearate, propylene glycol, sucrose, Titanium dioxide etc.

Carvedilol when used in the treatment of hypertension in combination with Other Drugs then the daily maximum single dose is Carvedilol 25 mg and the maximum daily dose is 50mg.

At the beginning of the first two days of CHF, the initial dose is Carvedilol 12.5 mg in a day. If the treatment is continued then the dose is increased to Carvedilol 25 mg per day. If the heart condition worsens then the dose can be increased in the next two weeks.

In the case of hypertension in the adults, the daily dose is Carvedilol 12.5 mg and this dose must be continued for further treatment.

In the case of chronic stable angina pectoris, the initial dose is 12.5mg twice a day. The dose may be continued further or maybe boosted after a week.

How Does the Carvedilol is Helpful:

Carvedilol basically works as a non-selective beta adrenergic receptor blocker (β1, β2) and an alpha adrenergic receptor blocker (α1).

It effects by reversibly binding to the beta adrenergic receptors on the cardiac myocytes. These inhibited receptors are helpful in preventing the response to the sympathetic nervous system, leading to decreased heart rate and also contractility. This is quite helpful in heart failure patients where the sympathetic nervous system is activated as a compensatory mechanism.

Carvedilol blockade of α1 receptors are responsible in order to cause vasodilation of blood vessels. This inhibition leads to decreased peripheral vascular resistance and an antihypertensive effect. Due to the carvedilol blockade of β1 receptors on the heart reflex tachycardia response does not exist.

Side Effects of Carvedilol:

Some common side effects of carvedilol tablets are:

  • Joint pain

  • low blood pressure

  • nausea

  • Dizziness

  • Shortness of Breath

Few severe adverse effects of carvedilol drug are:

  • Bronchospasm

  • Use during pregnancy is not sure

  • Use is not recommended during liver difficulty.

Carvedilol is an economical friendly drug that is available at the registered pharmaceutical firm and is administered worldwide.
