Side effects of Darunavir


Darunavir is an antiretroviral medication that is used in the prevention and treatment of HIV or AIDS. It is generally used in combination with other medications. Darunavir belongs to the protease inhibitor class drug that works by blocking the protease activity of the viral HIV genome and thus inhibiting it for further multiplication or replication. This medication is generally used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 infection and in the children above age 3.

There are several doses of darunavir available in the market. Some of its strengths are 75 my, 150 mg, 400mg, 600 mg. The highest dose which can be consumed at 800 mg of darunavir which is consumed by having two tablets of 40mg each. Darunavir 600 mg and Darunavir 800 mg are the most prescribed dosages.


Side effects of Darunavir:

Few common side effects of darunavir tablets are:

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhoea

  • Stomach pain

  • Weakness

  • Headache

  • Heartburn

  • Skin rashes

  • Abdominal pain

  • Dizziness

  • Tiredness

  • Mouth sores or ulcer

  • Blister in skin

  • Swelling in Eyes

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Chewing of food


Some serious side effects of darunavir which may appear and should immediately consult your doctor. These are mentioned below:

  • Drug-induced hepatitis such as acute hepatitis or cytolytic hepatitis has been reported with the use of darunavir tablets.

  • A patient may develop chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis which may complicate further the therapy.

  • Elevation in transaminases occurs.

  • Fatalities in case of liver injury have been increased.

  • Hypersensitivity has been reported in a few cases.

  • Some skin reactions like toxic epidermal necrolysis also have been observed.

  • Discontinue treatment if severe skin reaction develops.

  • Patients having a sulfonamide allergy should not use darunavir tablets.

  • Some patient may develop Diabetes mellitus or hyperglycemia

  • Redistribution or accumulation of body fats in several parts of the body especially neck, face, hand, feet.

  • Immune reconstitution syndrome occurs in several patients.

  • The patient suffering from haemophilia may have increased blood loss.

  • Signs of skin rashes

  • Pancreatitis: elevation in pancreatic problems such as normal functioning and enzyme production

  • Swelling in thyroid glands

  • Irregulation in menstruation cycle

  • Dark colour urine

  • Jaundice

  • Loss of appetite
