Mitomycin Injection- Medical Uses

Mitomycin is a medication used to treat cancer, i.e. a drug that prevents/delays the division of active cells to influence their metabolism in multiple ways. The therapeutic use of medicinal products in the treatment of cancer depends on the fact that one way in which cancerous cells differ from healthy cells in the body is that the rate of cell division is increased because of the lack of control of their growth.

Mitomycin c 40 mg Injection is used in cancer therapy for the relief of signs and symptoms (palliative cancer therapy). Mitomycin is useful in the case of the following tumours:

  • advanced metastatic stomach cancer (stomach carcinoma).

  • advanced and/or metastatic breast cancer (breast carcinoma).

  • cancer of the respiratory tract (non-small cell bronchial carcinoma).

  • advanced cancer of the pancreas (pancreatic carcinoma).

Approval: In the 1950s, mitomycin was discovered by Japanese scientists in cultures of the microorganism Streptomyces caespitosus.

Dosage Form: Mitomycin comes in the form of injection generically and under the brand name Mitosol/Mutamycin. The mitomycin injection should only be administered by healthcare practitioners experienced in this kind of therapy. Mitomycin is introduced to be used for injection or infusion into a blood vessel (intravenous use) or for introduction into the urinary bladder (intravesical instillation) following being dissolved. Your healthcare professional will prescribe a dose and treatment regimen that is appropriate for you. Prior to receiving mitomycin as injection or infusion into a vein a blood test, check of lung, kidney and liver function is needed to exclude any diseases, which may worsen while on the therapy with mitomycin.

The needle should remain in the vein while the drug is being administered. If the needle comes out or becomes loose, or the medicinal product goes into the tissue outside the vein (you may feel discomfort or pain); inform your doctor immediately.

Side Effects: Side effects of mitomycin 40 mg are usually mild and not life threatening. The commonly reported side effects are nausea, vomiting, increasing the risk of infections and decreased number of platelets counts.

Cost: The mitomycin cost in India usually may vary depending on the wholesaler/pharmacy and of course the type of brand (either generic or innovator) you choose. The cost of mitomycin injection ranges from around Rs. 2245 to Rs. 2620 for a supply of a vial of 1 injection.
